Roger Dowsett

In 2001 Roger gave up his career in industry to start TroutQuest and pursue a new life in fly fishing, his life-time passion.

Roger has fly fished extensively for trout and salmon throughout the UK from the idyllic chalk streams and small stillwaters of southern England to the grandeur of the Rivers Dee and Spey and the remote splendour of the trout lochs of Caithness and Sutherland. Abroad he has fished in Sweden, the USA and numerous times in Ireland. He has also twice taken fishing holidays in Argentina to fish for brown, rainbow and brook trout in the lakes and rivers of the Patagonian Andes, and sea trout on the Rio Grande in Tierra del Fuego.

Roger is a professionally qualified fly fishing instructor and guide holding the Salmon & Trout Association National Instructor Certificate (STANIC) for trout fishing and the Game Angling Instructor's Certificate (GAIC) for salmon fishing. He is also a licensed angling coach through fishcoach.org the coach angling license scheme for the Joint Angling Governing Bodies, and a member of the Salmon & Trout Association (S&TA), the Game Angling Instructors' Association (GAIA), and the Wild Trout Trust.

TroutQuest was an ambition for many years, and the Ross-shire location is a return to his home as a youth, and where he caught his first salmon on the River Alness over 30 years ago.

Paul Rankine

Paul is an associate of TroutQuest available to provide additional expert instruction and guiding for us when required. He also assists in developing new fishing experiences for TroutQuest customers by appraising new fishing locations and in developing successful fishing techniques.

Paul holds the Scottish Game Angling Instructors Certificate (SGAIC). This certificate is administered by the Scottish Anglers National Association (SANA), which is recognised by the Scottish Sports Council as the governing body for game angling in Scotland. As a past Chairman of the SANA Coaching Committee he was involved in improving and standardising fly fishing and fly casting instruction throughout Scotland.

Paul regularly organises fly fishing instruction days for both adults and children in the Aberdeen area, which cover all aspects of game angling. He is also available to assist TroutQuest with instruction for larger groups when required at our base in Evanton. If you are looking for instruction in the Aberdeen area, then you can e-mail him directly at paul.rankine@sky.com

Paul is also a member of the Fly Dressers Guild and has tied his own flies for fishing both in the UK and abroad in the fresh and in the salt for the past thirty odd years. He takes great delight in teaching others and in designing new flies for new purposes.

Paul was employed as a government marine biologist for some 26 years and maintains a keen interest in fisheries and other ecological matters both in the Scottish Highlands and elsewhere in the World.

He regularly fishes abroad, usually in the United States, and is experienced in all forms of angling, from sticklebacks to stripers to sailfish! Opposite is a capture from a holiday in 2003.
